Table Tablet vs QR Menu: When Each One Wins
Both do the same job: the guest orders alone, nobody waits for a waiter. But a tablet costs 100 000 UZS a month and a QR costs 10 000. A tenfold gap. This article takes three real places (an outdoor choyxona, a fast-turnover cafe, a premium restaurant) and shows which fits where.
What a table tablet is, what a QR menu is, and where they differ
laTable is an iPad or Android tablet on the table, locked in kiosk mode. The guest flips through the menu, fills a cart, orders, pays and calls the waiter. It connects to the till over local Wi-Fi; no internet required. iPadOS 17+ or Android 11+.
laQR is a sticker on the table. The guest scans it with their own phone and {restaurant}.qr.lacafe.app/{table} opens. Same menu, same cart, and the order lands at the till the same way. Nothing to buy, nothing to charge, nothing to steal.
The difference isn't the tech, it's what's in the guest's hand. The tablet is yours, always on the table, big screen. The QR runs on the guest's phone and depends on their battery and data.
Outdoor choyxona: the QR menu wins
A choyxona on the edge of Tashkent, 24 topchans, 40 degrees in summer. A tablet in direct sun overheats and shuts down within two hours. Dust, spilled tea, a child holding the hookah. Collecting 24 tablets every evening to charge them is a job in itself.
For a QR, a metal plate is screwed onto the topchan and lasts five years. The guest orders plov, shashlik and tea from their phone and taps 'Call the hookah attendant'. 24 topchans × 10 000 = 240 000 UZS, or 740 000 with the branch base. With tablets it would be 2 900 000.
Fast-turnover cafe: the tablet wins
A 12-table cafe next to a business centre. Lunch runs 12:30 to 14:00 and each table turns three times. The guest has 40 minutes. With a QR: pull out the phone, scan, wait for the page. No sign-up, but still 30 seconds. The tablet is already on the table, big screen, large photos.
Here the tablet's 100 000 UZS earns its keep. The table-turnover report shows it: average service time drops. 12 laTable + laBoard + 2 laWaiter come to 2 000 000 UZS a month. At 36 orders a day, that's 1 850 UZS per order.
One condition: the till and tablets on the same Wi-Fi. laTable finds laBranch on its own, but if the guest Wi-Fi is isolated, it won't. Check this on day one.
Premium restaurant: both, but used differently
European kitchen, average bill 400 000 UZS, guests linger for two hours. Here the waiter is part of the service. A tablet on the table clashes with the interior, and guests push it aside. A QR doesn't intrude: view the menu, the wine list, request the bill, leave feedback.
In a place like this the waiter takes the order on a laWaiter phone, and the guest uses the QR only to request the bill and leave a 1–5 star rating. If you still want a tablet, laMenu is view-only, no cart, 50 000 UZS a month. It connects straight to the cloud; no laBranch needed.
Tablet vs QR comparison: 6 criteria
A quick rundown. Menu, cart, order, payment and waiter call work the same in both. The difference is environment and money.
- Price: laTable 100 000/month plus buying the device · QR 10 000/month plus a sticker
- Internet: the tablet works on local Wi-Fi even when the internet is down · the QR depends on the guest's data
- Outdoors: the tablet fears heat and dust · a QR on metal lasts for years
- Speed: the tablet is ready on the table · a QR takes a scan and a load, about 30 seconds
- Upkeep: charging, wiping, battery status in the admin panel every 60 s · a QR needs none
- Guest feel: big screen, large photos · their own phone, familiar, unobtrusive
Outdoors and 20+ tables: QR. Quick lunches and big photos: tablet. Premium: QR plus laWaiter. Many restaurants mix them: 8 laTable inside, 16 QR on the topchans. In laCafe both live in one admin panel with one menu and one till. Not sure which fits? Send a photo of your floor to hello@lacafe.app and we'll tell you.
